How Reality Shows Manufacture the Consent for the Neoliberal Way of Labouring.
El juego de telerrealidad como una fábrica de consentimiento a los principios del trabajo neoliberal
Le jeu de téléréalité comme fabrique du consentement aux principes du travail néolibéral
Résumé
We analyze in this article the way gaming, working and labouring are woven together in two reality shows, Koh Lanta (Survivor, TF1), a game about survival, and Top Chef (M6), a talent contest. They are popular entertainments where entrants are engaged in experimentation and competition. We explain, based on content analysis, how gaming, working and labouring are interconnected and portrayed in a “mise en abyme” and how this portrayal allows to turn labouring according to the neoliberal ideology into a show.
