The Delphians and their monumental offerings: social elite and political notability in a small city from central Greece

Résumé

The study of about thirty monuments dedicated by Delphians allows us tto outline a social and political reading history and concludeswhich demonstrates that the Delphic society experienced two successive regimes of monumentality offering. During a first period (4th-3rd4th to 3rd century BC), no strongthere is no marked correlation appears between monumental offerings and the exercise of political power in the city. At the beginning of the 2nd century BC, even aswhen the democratic nature of institutions is no longer questionable, the elite of the Delphian political notability decides on taking the stagedecided to raise their profiles through monuments celebrating the unity of the family and the excellence of its members. The concentration of political power within a narrow group during the second half of the 1st century BC could relynow relied on practices of on social distinction practices alreadythat had been in place common for over a century.
