Aesthetics of construction site photography
Esthétique de la photographie de chantier
Résumé
Since the invention of the photographic process, construction site has been one of
its favorite subjects. Beyond its documentary and commercial values, construction sites
photography is today an aesthetic subject for many photographers, inscribing itself more
largely in a topicality of the contemporary creation around the theme of the site, the artists
seeing there a metaphor of the creative process, even of a state of the world. What specific
issues does the photographic medium pose to the aesthetic empowerment of the
construction sites ? From a study mainly centered on the photographs by Deidi von
Schaewen, Stéphane Couturier and Alain Bublex, this thesis questions the construction site
as subject and poietic of the photographic, opening up a materialist approach that finds its
foundations in the context of industrial modernity.
Because it questions the construction / deconstruction of the world around us, the
site becomes a fluctuating concept which, depending on the point of view adopted, reveals
different photographic perspectives on the world in mutation, between a modernist impulse
and an entropic gaze. Several contemporary photographers play with this dialectic tension
through an aesthetic of the in-between. In addition, photographs of construction sites taken
in various places on the planet bear witness to a productive activity on a global scale, where
the representation of the worker, and more broadly of the human being, must be questioned,
raising ethical and political issues to this research. Finally, it is also a question of site
photography as a poietic of History, from its narrative to the fictional representation of
possible worlds.
